Wimal Weerawansa, Minister of Industries and the Ministry of Industry on the instructions of the Minister of Industries to further increase the domestic demand for footwear from 25-40 million per annum to 60% - 65% of the local production and thereby create home-based, small and medium scale entrepreneurs and empower them. Providing certificates and equipments required for the shoe manufacturing industry to the trainees who have successfully completed the training course jointly organized by the Sri Lanka Textile and Garment Institute is done by Wimal Weerawansa, Minister of Industries today (16) at the Ministry of Industries under the patronage of Mr. Wimal Weerawansa, Minister of Industries.

The training course was organized and conducted by the Sri Lanka Textile and Garment Institute affiliated to the Ministry of Industries and the Ministry of Industry provided the necessary funds.The 10-day training course will be conducted in Kaduwela, Moratuwa, Homagama, Kesbewa, Maharagama, Kolonnawa and Avissawella in the Colombo District and will cover all parts of the country.

The Minister observed that the shoes designed by the trainees were of very good quality and that they were of good quality.Addressing the gathering, the Minister further said that the Ministry of Industries is ready to provide the necessary knowledge and support to manufacture footwear targeting the local.The first batch of new entrepreneurs trained in the Colombo District were also provided with certificates and equipment required for the footwear industry free of charge.Retired General Daya Ratnayake, Secretary to the Ministry of Industries, Chaminda Pathiraja, Additional Secretary (Industrial Development), Ministry of Industries, Sarath Fernando, Director General of the Textile and Apparel Institute of Sri Lanka, Sarath Wijebahu, Head of the Footwear and Leather Division of the Institute, Assistant Technical Officer, Silva Suresh Indika, Member of the Board of Directors of Ceylon Textiles and Apparel and Chandana Liyanage, Member of the Avissawella Municipal Council were also present.
